Cholesh Ritchil

On 18 March 2007, Cholesh Ritchil, an Adivasi rights activist, was arrested in the Kalibari area in Mymensingh and taken into custody by the joint forces. He reportedly died on the same day in Madhupur while in custody. His family alleged that he died due to torture by the joint forces. They attempted to lodge a First Information Report (FIR) at the police station, but the officer in charge refused on the grounds that an unnatural death case had already been filed.

BLAST, with ASK and ALRD, conducted an investigation and provided legal advice and aid to the family. The family, supported by human rights groups, including BLAST, demanded that an impartial investigation be held and that prompt action be taken against the members of the joint forces responsible for Cholesh’s death. organizations resulted in the Government appointing a judicial inquiry commission, which took evidence from a range of witnesses, including BLAST investigators, and produced a report of its findings. BLAST continues to call for publication of this report and justice for Cholesh’s family.
